When Chemtron shut down its Calgary facility, they needed a crating and packaging partner who could keep pace with an active dismantling operation — and help simplify the surrounding logistics rather than add to them.
A plant shutdown of this scope moves fast once it starts. Equipment comes off the line in sequence, and it needs to be crated or skidded with clearly marked inventory list of each crate immediately — not staged and waiting while packaging catches up. At the same time, Carriers Crating coordinated trucking for oversized loads, and crane services for heavy lifts. CCC's role was to handle all of the crating and packaging work on-site, and to organize the logistics of larger equipment loading and transport to the New Toronto Facility.
On-site assessment and project scope
Before any work began, CCC completed a detailed on-site assessment of the facility; cataloguing all equipment, identifying crating and skidding requirements for each piece, and mapping out the packaging sequence to align with the dismantling schedule. This gave Chemtron a clear picture of the packaging scope before work started.
Mobile on-site crating operation
Rather than waiting for equipment to be transported to a shop, CCC set up a mobile worksite inside the facility. As each piece came off the production line, it moved directly to crating or skidding on-site — keeping the project moving without holding up disassembly of equipment.
Vendor coordination support
The move required trucking for oversized loads, crane services for heavy lifts, and millwrights and electricians for dismantling. CCC coordinated with these vendors alongside its on-site crating work, and consolidated all related charges through a single invoice, reducing the number of vendors Chemtron had to manage directly and keeping the accounting straightforward on their end.
The shut down was done over the course of 1.5 Months with 5 Flat deck trailer loads of oversized equipment and 15 or more Intermodel loads of crated and skidded parts and dismantled pallet racks.
All production equipment was crated, skidded, and ready for transport by the move-out date. CCC's on-site presence kept packaging moving in step with dismantling, and consolidating vendor billing through CCC reduced the administrative burden on Chemtron's team during an already complex transition.
